The Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is one of the most important traditional holidays in China, filled with rich customs and cultural symbolism. From the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month to the 5th day of the first lunar month, each day is marked by unique activities and meanings, symbolizing reunion, good fortune, and happiness.
23rd of the 12th lunar month: On this day, families across China worship the Kitchen God (Zao Jun), offering thanks for his protection over the past year and praying for the health and prosperity of their loved ones in the coming year.
24th of the 12th lunar month: Known as "Sweeping the Dust and Welcoming the New Year," this is the day for a thorough cleaning of the house, symbolizing the removal of bad luck and making room for good fortune in the new year.
25th of the 12th lunar month: In northern China, there is a tradition of "grinding tofu," which represents preparing for the new year by transforming old things into new ones.
26th of the 12th lunar month: Many families begin preparing for the New Year by slaughtering pigs and butchering meat, a tradition symbolizing abundance and prosperity.
28th of the 12th lunar month: On this day, people begin preparing for the Spring Festival by making rice cakes, steaming buns, and decorating their homes with New Year's pictures, couplets, window decorations, and other festive symbols, signaling the final preparations for the arrival of the new year.
New Year's Eve: A time for family reunions, when families enjoy a sumptuous New Year's Eve dinner, paste Spring Festival couplets, and stay up late to welcome in the new year.
The 1st day of the New Year: This is the day for "New Year Greetings." People visit their elders and close family members to offer well wishes for the new year, typically dressed in new clothes, symbolizing a fresh start and good fortune.
The 2nd to 4th days of the New Year: These days are traditionally set aside for visiting relatives and friends. It's a time for socializing, exchanging greetings, and strengthening family and friendship bonds, all while wishing each other happiness and success in the year ahead.
The 5th day of the New Year: This day is known as "Welcoming the God of Wealth." Many people pray for wealth and success in business on this auspicious day.
