The full name of ASTM A672 standard is "standard specification for electric-fusion-welded steel pipe for high-pressure service at modern temperatures", that is, "standard specification for electric fusion welded steel pipes for medium temperature and high pressure".
The latest version of this standard is ASTM A672/A672M-19. It specifies the technical requirements for electric fusion welded steel pipes filled with metal. These steel pipes are made of pressure vessel quality plates and have various analysis and strength grades, which are suitable for high-pressure applications at moderate temperatures, such as boilers, heat exchangers, pipelines in oil and natural gas industries, etc.
Nominally, the standard covers pipes with an outer diameter of 16 inches (400mm) or more and a wall thickness of 3 inches (75mm). Other sizes of pipes can be provided if all other requirements are met. According to the ASTM A672 standard, steel pipes are classified into different grades according to the types of steel plates used, and according to the types of heat treatment performed in the manufacturing process, whether the welds have undergone radiographic inspection and whether the pipes have undergone pressure test, for example, 10 types indicate no heat treatment, no radiographic inspection and no pressure test, and 22 types indicate heat treatment with stress relief, radiographic inspection and pressure test.
