Why Is ERW Pipe the Backbone of Municipal Infrastructure Projects?

Municipal infrastructure-water supply, sewage disposal, natural gas transmission-demands pipes that balance strength, cost-efficiency, and corrosion resistance. For these applications, electric resistance welded steel pipe is the first choice for engineers worldwide, and Huayang's 35% of annual sales to municipal projects prove its reliability.

Water supply systems are the most common use case. Municipal water requires pipes that can handle 1-5MPa pressure, resist rust in underground environments, and be installed quickly to minimize traffic disruption-all strengths of ERW pipe. In 2023, we supplied 18,000 tons of electric resistance welded steel pipe to Bangkok's Eastern Water Supply Expansion Project. The client initially considered cast iron pipe but switched to our ERW product after seeing our data: our Q235-grade ERW pipe has a tensile strength of 490MPa (vs. 270MPa for cast iron), a 3PE anti-corrosion coating that lasts 30 years (vs. 15 years for cast iron), and a installation speed of 120 meters/day per team (50% faster than cast iron). "We completed the project 20 days ahead of schedule and saved $1.2 million in labor costs," noted the project's Thai engineer.

Natural gas transmission is another critical municipal use. Gas pipes need leak-proof integrity and compatibility with low-pressure systems (0.1-0.4MPa), and Huayang's ERW pipe delivers on both. For a 2022 Jakarta residential gas project, we supplied 12,000 tons of Φ114mm ERW pipe with internal epoxy coating (to prevent gas contamination). The pipes underwent 100% pressure testing (1.2MPa, 24 hours) and 5% X-ray inspection-all passing with zero defects. Indonesia's state-owned gas company, Pertamina, later listed Huayang as a "Preferred Supplier" for future municipal gas projects.

Sewage systems, though less visible, rely heavily on ERW pipe's durability. Our ERW pipe for sewage applications uses a special zinc-aluminum coating that resists chemical corrosion from wastewater. In 2024, we supplied 9,000 tons to Manila's Sewage Treatment Plant Expansion-where the pipes endure daily exposure to ammonia and organic acids. After 6 months of operation, inspection reports showed no signs of corrosion, outperforming the previous concrete pipe system that required 10% replacement annually.
