Why Carbon Steel Dominates Pipe Production

Carbon steel's balanced carbon content translates to superior mechanical properties, making it the only viable material for electric resistance welded steel pipes. Pure iron's properties, by contrast, make it incompatible with modern pipe manufacturing and application.

Strength: Carbon Steel Handles Pressure and Loads

Tensile and Yield Strength

Carbon steel's tensile strength (375MPa-725MPa) is 1.5-3 times higher than pure iron. For example:

Huayang's Q235 ERW Pipes: Φ60×3.2mm pipes have a yield strength of 235MPa, meaning they can withstand 1.6MPa internal pressure without permanent deformation. Wrought iron pipes of the same size deform at 0.6MPa;

Huayang's Q345 HFW Pipes: Φ89×6.45mm pipes have a yield strength of 345MPa, supporting 3.0MPa pressure for Xinjiang Oilfield's water injection system. Cast iron pipes would crack under this load.

This strength is critical for safety-our carbon steel pipes rarely fail in service, while pure iron pipes have a 15%-20% failure rate within 5 years of installation.

Weld Strength (Critical for ERW/HFW)

ERW and HFW technologies rely on strong, uniform welds to ensure pipe integrity. Pure iron's welds are inherently weak:

Wrought iron welds have tensile strength ≤180MPa, far below the 90% base metal strength required for ERW pipes;

Cast iron welds are brittle and porous, prone to leaking within months of use.

Carbon steel, by contrast, welds seamlessly: our Q235 ERW pipes have weld strength ≥340MPa (90% of base metal), and Q345 HFW pipes have weld strength ≥310MPa. This ensures the weld seam (the most critical part of a welded pipe) is as strong as the pipe itself-confirmed by 100% ultrasonic testing at Huayang, with a 99.8% pass rate for ERW pipes and 99.9% for HFW steel pipes.
